CHL – Texas Concealed Handgun License Application Procedures

In response to numerous veterans asking how to obtain a CHL, The Law Office of Robert B. Goss, P.C. https://www.attorneyforveterans.com is providing the following information based upon your veteran status and attempt to aid veterans obtain a benefit they earned (reduced fee for CHL).

If you have any questions regarding obtaining a CHL in the Houston area please contact:
Mr. Mark Giordonello (Mr. G) at 281-980-9103. Mr. Giordonello has agreed to talk and assist veterans, if possible, who are seeking their CHL.

Additionally, there are many CHL Instructors, but in the Houston area if you call Mr. G. and you like his approach you can arrange a date and time for training.

Start Application and fee:
$0 to 140 – online application and payment to Texas.

Military
Active Military $0
• Electronic fingerprints submitted using FAST • CHL-6 Form (Photo Holder/ID Signature)
• 2 passport photos • CHL-100 Training Form (received from CHL instructor upon course completion); Military range scores, from within the preceding 5 years of your CHL application, can be used in place of the proficiency portion of the CHL-100 (GC §411.1881)
• Copy of applicant’s military ID • Current leave earnings statement; OR Current orders; OR Current pay stub; OR Letter from the commanding officer; OR DD-214 showing honorable discharge and date (If application is within 365 days of discharge)
• A color, front and back, copy of state issued DL/ID **

Veteran $70
• Electronic fingerprints submitted using FAST • CHL-6 Form (Photo Holder/ID Signature)
• 2 passport photos • CHL-100 Training Form (received from CHL instructor upon course completion); Military range scores, from within the preceding 5 years of your CHL application, can be used in place of the proficiency portion of the CHL-100 (GC §411.1881)
• Copy of DD-214; OR Any other official documentation showing the applicant is honorably discharged or retired military • A color, front and back, copy of state issued DL/ID **

Ready to fill-out your application?
If so Click on https://txapps.texas.gov/txapp/txdps/chl/ (veterans have a reduced fee – $70, Active Duty or Veterans WITHIN 365 days of separation or discharge = $0).

1. On left side scroll down to green box “New users” click on User and “Green button Apply”

3. Fill out the Application 4. Go to next page State where you have lived for the last 5 years Where you have worked last 5 years
5. Go to next 2 pages Eligibility affidavit – – Read then check if true 6. Read 2nd affidavit and check if you understand and agree 7. Next page, pay fee applicable to you.

Print Receipt / Bar Code sheet and bring to class (Must print this page showing Bar code on top, checklist in middle, address on bottom).

Now scroll down the page to the fingerprint button:
Fingerprints, click on the fingerprint option below payment 1. Schedule appointment time, date, and location;
2. Fill-out this form;
3. Pay and confirm appointment;
4. Print, fill-out, and take FAST form to appointment.

For the actual training:
Make appointment with Mr. Giordonello or your CHL Instructor for CHL training appointment:

Prior to course:
Get fingerprints, see above in Texas DPS CHL application
Get ID photo (2 PASSPORT PHOTOS)
Confirm items your instructor wishes you to bring for the classroom session and the live fire training.

Training Day:
Ok, the day has arrived for training.

Mr. Giordonello will cover all REQUIREMENTS FOR CHL PER STATE LAW. Classroom topics include:
• Legal aspects of the law • Non-violent dispute resolution • Safe handling and storage of firearms • Use of force and deadly force • Firearm safety
Range
1:30- 3:30 PM (approximate)
1. Gun rental from Range ~$10 [depending on where you take your CHL class confirm availability of a rental weapon and the price for the rental] (qualifying on a semi-automatic weapon allows you to carry either a semi-automatic or revolver);
2. You will have to qualify with 50 rounds from 3, 7, and 15 yards.

After you have passed the CHL course Mr. G. or your instructor will provide to the successful applicant:
CHL Form 6 CHL Form 100
Mail these documents and all items required by your checklist to TX DPS.

Four to 6 weeks later if all paperwork is complete the State of Texas will send your CHL.
